Slavery in Massachusetts: Newburyport Connections

February 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Merrimack River with islands

FIRST FRIDAY SOCIAL – MEMBERS ONLY

This presentation will explore our economic ties to the transatlantic slave trade that implicates New England in the monumental tragedy that took the lives of millions of human beings and, in doing so, formed the basis of America’s economy. The many ships built in Newburyport and along the Merrimack River that were involved in the slave trade will be explored.

Our guest lecturer, Susan Harvey, approached the topic of northern slavery with her initial question: “was my family involved in the slave trade, and if so, how?” These are questions that people all over New England are beginning to ask themselves as new information comes to light and new scholarship on the topic of northern slavery is published.
