Merrimack: A History of the River that Made Newburyport
How well do you know the Merrimack? John Macone will present a slideshow lecture that explores 10,000 years of the river’s fascinating history — from its beginnings as a landlocked lake to its pivotal role in Newburyport’s evolution — and how Newburyporters dramatically reshaped the river itself.
Our guest lecturer, John Macone is the policy and education specialist for
Merrimack River Watershed Council. One of his primary roles at the council is researching and presenting slideshows, walking tours and hikes that focus on the rich history of the Merrimack River, and the environmental challenges it faces in the 21st century. Prior to joining the council, he spent 25 years working as a journalist, most recently as editor of the Daily News of Newburyport. John holds a bachelor of arts degree in American history from Union College, and is a longtime resident of Amesbury.
