Did you know that the Custom House Maritime Museum is one of thirteen Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Centers?
Have you ever traveled any stretch of the ninety mile route of the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway to explore the picturesque and historic Boston’s North Shore? The route meanders through fourteen coastal communities in Essex County Massachusetts and makes a great outing for the day. Pack the car and a picnic lunch to get out to explore your own back yard safely. Many of the historic sites and museums are closed but there is still much to see out-of-doors. There are dairy and horse farms, historic districts with period architecture and working harbors.
The Essex National Heritage Area (ENHA) engages people in our country’s past to forge deeper relationships with the communities, institutions and the environments of Essex County, improving quality of life for today and future. ENHA promotes discovery of heritage experiences through their annual Trails & Sails event, the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway and annual Photo contest. ENHA tells inspiring stories, offer learning opportunities and provide resources to partners who share their mission. The ENHA Visitor Center Grants provide critical funding to the thirteen welcome centers around Essex County, allowing them to be open and accessible to the 2.7 million annual visitors to this region.
